Regional RTAP Library
 Gary Hegland, SURTC
The Small Urban & Rural Transit Center (SURTC) has embarked on an almost exasperating mission of compiling a regional training material library for Montana, North and South Dakota. The task involves developing a computerized on-line list of training resources that transit operators can choose from to assist in conducting their daily training objectives.
The idea was originally conceived at a SURTC advisory board meeting. Currently, there are three states participating in this regional Rural Transit Assistance Program (RTAP) training library. Each state has contributed financially to the development and stocking of this regional library.
SURTC's role is to develop the on-line library. This mostly involves creating a computerized program that will list a complete easy-to-view inventory and allow for systematic and recorded check-out procedures for the material. To date, SURTC has developed the computer program, received material from 3 states, and is in the process of making a documented listing and description of all the material. There are more than 500 items listed in the inventory dating back to UMTA in the middle 1980's.
Two representatives from each of the three states form a committee to direct the development of the library. They will be deciding what items will remain in the library inventory and what to delete because of duplication, out-of-date material and poor quality. The library will also purchase some new material to be determined by the committee. Committee members include:
Montana: Patrick Sanders, trainer, Montana DOT Sylvester Barros, operations manager, Great Falls Transit
North Dakota: Cheryl Jongerius, manager, Dickey County Senior Citizens Jerry Engel, manager, Williston/Region 1 Senior Citizens
South Dakota: Jackie Mattheis, transportation specialist, SD DOT Mike Kayras, Bus Driver, Prairie Hills Transit
