PASS Training in Spearfish
By Barb Cline, Director Prairie Hills Transit Spearfish, SD
Transit professionals from North and South Dakota attended one day training classes June 23, 24 and 25 in Spearfish, SD. The full-day driver-training workshop provided instruction in emergency evacuation techniques, proper wheelchair and occupant securement, disability awareness and sensitivity, and customer service. All attendees received training material and certificates of completion from Jim Holman. Holman, a master trainer, has trained more than 1,500 drivers and 1,000 certified trainers.
Thursday and Friday evening attendees were invited to an evening barbecue at the Cline ranch. Attendees agreed that the food and camaraderie were a fit end to a great training.
On Saturday while Holman and Prairie Hills Transit (PHT) Driver Supervisor, Janet Sechser, trained Rapid Transit Drivers in Rapid City, another event unfolded in Spearfish. The First Annual Professional Operators Skill Show Event (POSSE) Roadeo hosted by River Cities Transit (RCT) and Prairie Hills Transit was held as a practice for drivers hoping to improve their competitive edge. PHT Course Marshall, Mike Kayras, and RCT Director, Ron Baumgart, were pleased with the turnout and hope to see the event repeated next year. Courses and testing were similar to the state and national roadeo. Note that trainer Holman heads the CTAA Roadeo held annually in conjunction with the CTAA Expo.
Whether attendees were new drivers at the training or first-time competitors, I didn't once hear the comment that it was dull or attendees didn't learn. Thanks to all of you for your participation and for making it a success. Our professional operators are the people on the front line and the best investment we make is in training them with the tools to do their jobs the best they can.
